Alright.... helpful comments.... why the random buildings that look like trailers? Is Iowa somehow proud of its trailer courts? Why a blood-shot eyeball? Is everyone in Iowa a stoner? Why the rage-filled type that screams LIBERTIES and RIGHTS? Are Iowans a bunch of loose cannons? Being from Iowa, I'm disappointed, ya know..... since I don't remember everyone being pot-smoking, rage-filled, trailer-dwellers.

Maybe the story would help.... maybe.

@SMS yeah, so you pretty much guessed it. I don't really want to put the whole story behind the piece on the never-fading internet, but I can say you're not too far off in your speculation. I loved growing up in Iowa, but at times, as a teenager, the environment left a lot to be desired for entertainment. Don't get me wrong, I'm proud I grew up there, but there is a lot of what you described, and I think some of that grows out of boredom. I still have a lot of friends and acquaintances who live in Iowa, and some of them are not too far off from what you described either. I also think that freedom, i.e. liberties and rights, can be dangerous/scary sometimes. Anyways, no need to get in a whole debate about it. It's not representative of the entire state, or everyone's experiences there, and it's not representative of my only experience growing up in Iowa. It's just what came to mind when I was given this project.

I agree with mnypny. As a fellow Iowan, I would have been nice to see something a little more aspirational. Not that it has to be a cheerleader piece, but there's a strong misconception of Iowa as some kind of meth-addled, backwards hell hole. If you're FROM here, why would you continue to promote that misconception? Our history characterizes us as anything but. Our legislative history regarding civil rights specifically, for example, is very progressive.

In 1851, we removed the ban on inter-racial marriage - over 116 years BEFORE the Supreme Court in 1967. That same year, we gave married women property rights. in 1855, the University of Iowa was the first public university to admit both men and women. In 1968, we desegregated our schools 86 years before Brown Vs. Board of Education in 1954. And, of course, our recent repeal on the ban of same-sex marriage.

Instead we get "I lived in Iowa once and it was really boring!" I'm sorry, but your approach was pretty lazy.
